With many European countries guaranteed poor weather conditions, it is common practice for their motorists to fit winter tyres. The performance benefits of winter tyres are widely understood and accepted, and in many cases their application plays a critical role in avoiding the country grinding to a halt.

In some countries it has also become a legal requirement to fit winter tyres and has resulted in governments passing legislation and subsequent fines to drivers who haven’t changed from summer tyres to winter tyres as the seasons change.

Why fit winter tyres in the UK?
Well, in the same way you’d pick a hammer to hit a nail and not a screw driver, it’s about picking the right tool for the job. Winter tyres are designed to perform best at temperatures of 7°c and below. At these temperatures, there are a number of performance benefits to using winter tyres, including responsiveness and grip.

When should I fit winter tyres?
Within the UK average temperatures have been known to fall below 7°c for lengthy periods. In December 2010 for example, the Met Office recorded the mean minimum temperature in England at between -2°c and -4°c. With weather like this it makes it that much more important to switch to a specially designed winter tyre.
